Pastoral Counseling is a modern, specialized Discipline, developed within a very old Tradition, practiced in all Christian Churches as "Pastoral Care". Many of us Pastors nowadays are conducting a special Training in Pastoral Counseling, the Therapeutic or Clinical version of Pastoral Care, for better to meet the Challenge in that Part of our Ministry: Taking Care of Brothers and Sisters, when they are suffering in Distress and Crisis.

We hold that true Pastoral Care must have a good and therapeutic Effect. And decent Psychotherapy (= Counseling) has to take Care of the Patient as a Whole Person. Pastoral Care and Counseling (= Psychotherapy) are so to speak two Aspects of the same Task: The caring and healing Ministry towards a Person whose Life is falling apart. Pastoral Counseling can be defined simply as Psychotherapy or Talk-Therapy in a Christian Context.

Christianity is the great Message (Magna Charta) of Liberation for all Men. An Invitation to a new and better Life in Freedom. As created by God, we believe: We are Born to be Free. And "Christian Counseling" can’t be anything but: Counseling for Freedom! So my primary Ministry as a Pastor must be to help my Neighbor to get out of Fear and Slavery of any Kind – out into the Christian Freedom (Courage to be) we were born to.
